Why You need a Firewall
Because of the increasing threats that are appearing on the Internet you need the protection of a firewall. In fact, every computer that is connected to the internet should have one installed. You'll be a lot safer once you have protected your personal files, information, and financial data, from Internet intruders
Here are the features that are available in any good software based firewall program:
- Inbound filtering - Blocks hackers from gaining access to your computer
- Outbound filtering - Prevents your personal data from leaving your computer without your approval. Prevents spyware from sending your personal information across the Internet

If a program stops functioning after you install a firewall then you'll have to make a change in the firewall's configuration that will enable the program to operate. All good software firewalls will prompt you and over time the program learns what is allowed and what is not allowed.
Windows XP with service pack 2 has a firewall built in. Because the XP firewall does not have outbound protection I recommend installing a third party software firewall. There are several good software firewall programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. I recommend a software firewall from Zone Labs. If you are running Windows XP with service pack 2 you need to disable XP's firewall after you install another software firewall.
